Readers will likely come down sharply with two opinions of this book: They'll either love it or they'll hate it, no middle ground. The story is a complex one and starts out along the familiar lines of the common-girl-falls-in-love-with-prince theme. He leaves her; she gets pregnant. Years later, Tariq decides to purge Jessa from his system with one more night so that he can finally move on with his life.... We've been there before, certainly. However, Caitlin Crews takes a bold step by adding a very real-life atmosphere to this story: adoption. She (and her editor) are to be commended for adding an element that's rarely broached in these stories. Sure, it comes up. Many a hero and heroine are shown to be scarred products of adoptions and neglectful adoptive parents gone bad. (That's something I've always found hackneyed and distasteful, by the way.) Readers who think they'd be turned off by the idea of a heroine opting for adoption -- as opposed to struggling and likely failing to raise a child by herself -- should give this book a shot. It's well written, has some lovely imagery and is extremely thoughtful in the way it was put together. In this story, we see two extremely complex and well-rounded characters. Frankly, this story has a lot more depth than Presents books usually offer. There is plenty of romance, certainly, but there is an emotional element that really grabs you and, if anything, makes the premise of their love story stronger in the end. We understand the anguish and pain Jessa went through to make her decision. As she tells Tariq, and we watch his reactions and subsequent actions, your heart goes out to both of them. This story doesn't end neatly or tritely, but it will leave you with a warm feeling. Like most of us, Tariq and Jessa had to earn their "happily ever after" and that nothing should be taken for granted.
