Maine is well known for Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine. They have been honored and written about in dozens of books and featured in films. How many have heard of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery? How many have heard of The Old Sixth? How many have heard of the 1st Maine Cavalry? Three of Maine's most glory achieving Regiments, next to the 20th that is. The Heavy Artillery literally wiped out in the Petersburg Charge, June 18, 1864. The 6th Maine Infantry captured more flags and stormed more batteries then most regiments combined. In one of the biggest battles of the entire Civil War, next to Gettysburg. The Battle of Rappahannock Station. Captain Morrill of the 20th saw his old Maine Friends making a Suicide Charge or Forlorn Hope. Without hesitation, asked for 50 volunteers from the 20th, and stood side by side with the Sixth as they charged. Not only winning the day, but winning a Congressional Medal of Honor. The 1st Maine Cavalry, fought in more battles then any regiment of the entire Civil War. They made more Cavalry Charges and saved the Union from defeat countless times, in some cases single handed. These men are buried in our cemeteries, forgotten beneath cracked and broken gravestones, without flags and quickly vanishing from the public record. It is my honest attempt to right this wrong, with this book. A written tribute to these courageous men, who fought and died for freedom so long ago.
