Maigret is always the most fun when his eyes go dull and he looks like a peasant about to doze off. In this collection of three novels, Maigret plays the humble oaf to perfection, surrounded by wealthy people who dress beautifully and live in a rarefied world where only money, rank or power count for anything. MAIGRET IN SOCIETY introduces the chief inspector to a storybook romance between two ancient aristocrats who have been kept apart by decades by the complications of their exalted positions. Maigret's job is to find out why the Comte de Saint-Hilaire killed himself on the eve of realizing his love at last. In MAIGRET AND THE MILLIONAIRES, a celebrity playboy with three ex-wives is murdered in his bath. Poor Maigret, who prefers to live simply, must jet about Europe and drink martinis instead of beer to penetrate the mystery of the multi-millionaire's personal and business relationships. MAIGRET IN RETIREMENT finds the ex-chief picking beetles off the eggplants in his garden, when an imperious old lady orders him to investigate the death of her niece. I find this to be the weak novel in the collection, but there are still plenty of enjoyable moments with Maigret secretly fuming over ostentatious villas, manicured parks, glossy boats and sleek cars. All in all, a delightful collection.
