A Very Good Standalone Contemporary Romance from Burton

A transplanted New Yorker, Jordan, returns to her roots in the Deep South in order to fix up and sell the old family home she inherited from her grandmother. She encounters the local "bad boy", Sam, upon whom she had a crush in high school when she was a shy, gawky "drama nerd". He has grown into a magnificent man, and she, a beautiful, witty, and talented woman. The attraction is instantaneous. Both of them, though, bear emotional scars from their different pasts. Can there be a future between a wounded city woman and a wounded small town man? This was an 4 to 4.5 star book, not quite 5, if only because the general plot is quite familiar and Jaci's personal touch didn't really change the familiar plot very much. On the other hand, what earns Jaci her stars is her beautiful approach to the story, her really quite good writing, the overall sensuality, and the very good character development. In addition, the grammar, punctuation, spelling, and lack of misuse of homophones were really quite wonderful. Even more than usual for a Burton book, I was really drawn into the story and the characters. If it weren't for the somewhat tired plot, this would definitely be a 5 star novel. Roxanne P.

Do you remember YOUR first kiss?

As if the Summer months in Magnolia aren't hot enough, the passionate fire of adolescent lust that was ignited on the day Sam gave Jordan her first kiss fourteen years ago, has now turned into to a fully-grown, blazing inferno of lust and love so scorchingly hot, that insecurities, fear, denial, time or distance cannot contain it. Jordan Weston is a smart, sexy, independent woman who ran from her small town roots for big city life and the anonymity it gives her. She has always had insecurities and fears about becoming like her mother, who abandoned her at a young age because of her unhealthy dependence on men. Jordan wants to be in full control of her heart and emotions, and so far, she has managed to keep her heart aloof from all men...until Sam. Sam is the one and only man who has come close to scaling the wall surrounding Jordan's well-protected heart, and before her summer in Magnolia is over, Jordan will be forced to deal with how out of control and needy Sam makes her feel. Sam, the arrogant, sarcastic, and lethally hot bad boy let Jordan run from that hot and steamy kiss back in high school because of his own insecurities. But now he is a very secure and fully-grown man who realizes his heart has it's own agenda where Jordan is concerned, and he won't let her run away so easily this time. He has to remind Jordan of all the good things, like friendships, love, and laughter, that she experienced growing up in Magnolia, and if he is unable to convince Jordan to stop running, she'll be taking his heart with her when she leaves. Spending the summer in Magnolia, reestablishing old friendships, and falling in love are not on Jordan Weston's agenda for cutting all ties to her past and Magnolia. However, fate and Magnolia's matchmaking inhabitants have other plans for Jordan. In order to get back to her big city life, she needs Sam to do major renovations on Belle Coeur, the home she grew up in with her grandmother, so she can sell it to fund her dream of owning her own theater. Sam has no intention of falling for yet another woman that doesn't love him and embrace his small town life in Magnolia, no matter how perfect everyone else thinks she might be for him. Will Jordan allow her past to dictate her future or will Sam conquer her fears and take her heart captive? Can Sam convince Jordan to accept the treasures that he and Magnolia have to offer her, or will he give up his own dreams for her big city dreams? "Magnolia Summer" is another sensually seductive and wonderfully written story by Jaci Burton, laden with blisteringly hot sexual tension and fulfillment. Definitely a keeper that I'll re-read on one of the cold winter nights to come.
