Magnetic North is an erotic thriller set in two sharply contrasting cultures -- starting in the fast lane of the familiar Los Angeles contemporary music industry, then moving to the ragged and isolated island coast line of British Columbia. Yvette Sagard -- a former singer now turned songwriter -- lives in L.A. with her son Nat. Paul, her ex-husband and former drug-addled music partner, suddenly reappears in her life demanding joint custody of their son. Already in emotional turmoil she now feels physically threatened. In panic and with Nat in tow, Yvette takes off from the dangerous situation to where she had spent her safe youthful summers -- the welcome solitude of Canada's northwest coastal islands. What starts out for the two as an idyllic back-to-nature retreat at a cottage on a remote island gradually evolves into a watery nightmare. A reclusive and sexually repressed local doctor, Angus McCoy, becomes enamoured with Yvette. At first he shyly engages Yvette. then secretly stalks her. When her ex-husband Paul ominously shows up suddenly to claim the boy, she is in double jeopardy. The two men clash. The chaotic deviance and horror that follows tests Yvette physically in ways she could never have imagined. Yvette's character has a range of strong female sides: an accomplished singer/ songwriter, a protective mother, a sensuous but unassuming woman. During her trials she discovers within herself the guts to triumph in a most primitive circumstance. The screenplay's inherent music/video background produces possibilities for a very rich musical fabric and score.
