This is a story of love, betrayal, and retribution featuring the fictional Douse family, set against the backcloth of actual events during and after the English Civil War. The patriarch of the family, Sir Robert Douse is the Head of the Secret Service for King Charles 1, and his only son Christophe is a Cavalier and Captain of The Dorset Royals. Sir Robert first hears of a secret Plan pertaining to the King in the Summer of 1642, immediately prior to the onset of War. Its code name is Madrigal. In a race against time, he sets out to reveal the secret of Madrigal, what it is, what it means, who are its protagonists, and how it pertains to the King. That quest was to prove to be a roller-coaster ride of divided loyalties, subterfuge, intrigue, and murder. It involved both Cavaliers and Roundheads, Conspirators and Spies, and most enigmatic of all, Highwaymen. England, the Douse family and their closest friends and allies, are torn apart as a consequence of Madrigal, a Plan that was, perhaps, one of history's most Closely Guarded Secrets.
