interesting tale of real life prostitute

She was forced into protitution, and had a hard time coping with it. She never liked it, and she never really got along with the other prostitutes.The story takes place in the American midwest in the 19th century.It's been a while (around 15 years) since I read this, but one incident from it I'll always remember is that it was the custom when customer came to the whorehouse she worked in, that if the customer decided that he didn't care to make a purchase after all, that the wares weren't sufficiently to his liking, then some of the prostitutes would make a point of spitting on his back as he was leaving.
