A timely and gripping novel

Full disclosure:I bought this book and did not receive an advanced readers copy from any publisher. “Madelaine Before The Dawn” has been compared to “Germinal” by Zola; most likely for the straightforward descriptive language used throughout. There are certain broad similarities. Both works are about the lives of the poor and disadvantaged: the grind. Zola’s poor have done the work of awakening and seek to band together as laborers to wrest for themselves a better life. Collette’s Madelaine is slightly different in that she stands alone for change of the most significant kind. Teenaged girls and younger women can enjoy the book as a coming of age story about struggle and resilience. Older women can draw a direct line between Madelaine’s plight and resolution to the Pelicot and Epstein cases of today. This is a story of a girl coming of age in an extremely harsh and unforgiving world. Although the book is described as “ in a time outside time “ close reading places it squarely within the Middle Ages. Women then lived without the illusions of agency women allow themselves now. The ostentatious wealth of a few men has ever been oppressive to the female population. In this regard the book is both timely and political. The tale is superbly paced and richly rendered in under 200 pages-an excellent weekend binge read.
