"Made in Taiwan" should be an unnecessary appellation; the "Acer" brand name should be sufficient to identify the product as made by Chinese and coming from Taiwan just as Mercedes Benz is identified with Germany and Cartier with France. When that happens, perhaps the Chinese people will finally take their historical place as the creators of something other than antiquity. The author likens Acer's plight "to a frog being boiled in a pot of water." The water temperature was steadily increasing (competition), but so gradually that the frog was not aware that it was in mortal danger. But suddenly, Compaq turned up the fire. In May 1992, it announced 30% price reductions on personal computers across the board. The water was now in a rapid boil, Hong Chi's frog had to react or be cooked in its own (inventory) stew. " Stan Shih had no family, political, or commercial connections to propel and sustain him. He is the antithesis of the successful Chinese businessman who invariably depends upon family relationships and/or official guanxi (connections) to reach the top. Stan depended on technical ability, but he did not study abroad nor has he ever lived in another country; he is completely homegrown. As such, he personifies the "American Dream" of the local boy made good, and he made it into the "Taiwan Dream". Maybe it will become the "Chinese Dream" of millions in China.
