Almost a keeper, but not quite

"Mackenzie's Magic" is almost a keeper. It has a very nice twist on time travel, and the heroine is spunky and smart, and doesn't want to change. Mackenzie, while definitely rough around the edges, is a likable fellow and definite marriage material. However, the reason I could not give it five stars is that the main characters kept having the same argument throughout most of the story. Mackenzie thought he accidentally traveled through time because Jane Everleigh was a witch; Jane thought Mackenzie was mentally ill and hadn't traveled through time at all. So you would get this in varying forms:"Send me back, witch!""I'm not a witch! It's the illness!"I thought that if I heard "It's the illness" one more time, I would scream. I do realize Jane was mechanically repeating the same line every time the subject of time travel came up so she would not have to deal with the reality of it. It is a valid reaction to something so off the wall happening -- but nonetheless terribly, terribly annoying after you've read it about 25 times before.Truly, overall the book is really great. It is a nice time travel, with more realism than expected, a strong heroine and a hero you don't want to sock in the eye. If you can handle the constant "witch, illness" arguments, it is definitely worth reading.

interesting but mediocre time travel

Jane was too practical to believe in wishin on a star but after she was forced to marry Dominic Stanbridge the most notorious rake in London, she would try jsut about anything. Steeling herself against his wiles, she promised to thwart his attempts at seduction. Yet nothing could have prepared her for her husband's abrupt about face the morning after the wedding. Suddenly the city's fashion plate was running about clad in only his silk robe, speaking in a strange Scottish accent and claiming to have never seen a fork! Jane couldn't possibly believe what he said; that he was Colin MacKenzie, a Scottish earl who had lived 300 years ago. Nor could she believe the spine tingling attraction she felt for the man she had sworn to hate.

MAGICAL FAIRYTALE

tHIS IS THE MOST MAGICAL STORY I HAVE EVER READ. IT IS TRULY A MAGICAL FAIRYTALE. I COULD READ IT AGAIN AND AGAIN! THIS BOOK TRULY MAKES ONE BELIEVE IN MAGIC. MACKENZIE IS EVERY WOMAN'S DREAM COME TRUE. THE MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE KINSTAIR CHRONICLES AND THE QUESTIONS REVOLVING AROUND HIS TIME TRAVEL ARE GREAT. I RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WANTING TO DREAM.

A delightful story

Though now a marchioness Jane Everleigh loathes the man nineteenth century rules that forced her to marry even if he is one of the wealthiest members of society. On the other hand, the notorious rake Dominc Stanbridge finds his new bride quite fascinating because unlike the horde of women, who openly desire him, she rejects him.The morning after the nuptials, something weird happens to Lancaster, as Dominic is known. He had taken a blow to the head and now speaks in a wild Scottish brogue, has the manners of a barbarian, and claims to be a sixteenth century Laird, Colin Mackenzie. Even stranger is Jane's reaction. She rebuffed that same body just yesterday, but now finds it irresistible. As Colin begins to persuade the skeptical Jane it is all true, they fall in love, but he must return to 1562 to finish his quest.Readers will feel the magic of this exciting historical romance. Though the displacement needs acceptance and Colin adapts to easily to a more advanced technology, the audience will find his tale fascinating. Lady Jane is a wonderful heroine and her love for Colin crosses the time barrier. Debra Dier has written a refreshingly delightful time travel romance that will provide much entertainment to fans of that sub-genre and those who enjoy a strong nineteenth century romance.Harriet Klausner
