Mary Morrell Mackbee has been an educational leader for over 50 years. Born and raised in the segregated South, Mary was educated in segregated schools by dedicated Black teachers and principals, several of whom became her role models and inspirations for her career choice. Because of her life experiences Mary has learned how to lead through a culture of racism and sexism. Mary is a leader who has been principal of St. Paul Central High School, an urban high school, the longest high school in continuous existence in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she developed a community of students, families, and teachers in an urban setting that continues to provide an educationally challenging program for students of all interests, abilities, and races. Throughout her career she challenged many outdated norms and rules. She has earned many awards and recognitions for her excellence in leadership. This book hopes to provide insight to others who can learn from her as they find their way on their journey to become the educational leaders of the future in this ever-changing landscape we know as education.
