Lyre Harp for Absolute Beginners: Tuning, Hand Position, and 50 Easy Songs by String Letter - No Sheet Music Needed

By Richard Leonard Lorke

Somebody gave you a lyre harp, and nothing in the box explained how to start.

Sixteen strings, a small metal key, and no idea which string is which. This book is written for exactly that moment. It assumes you cannot read music, have no plans to learn, and would like to play something recognizable this week.

You will play by string letter instead. Every string has one name, every piece is printed as a line of words with the strings underneath, and nothing is left to be picked up somewhere else.

What is inside

- All sixteen strings named, in order, with the standard C tuning printed string by string
- How to hold the instrument, where to pluck, and what each hand does
- Tuning with the key and a tuner, plus how to tune by ear when the battery dies
- Fifty public domain pieces: twenty very easy melodies, twenty folk songs, ten Christmas carols
- Every piece written in plain string letters, with the words above so you always know where you are
- Plucking patterns, broken chords and a simple way to bring in the left hand
- Care, string changing, storage and a troubleshooting chapter for when something buzzes

Written for absolute beginners

No notation, no theory, no exercises that go nowhere. Chapters one to three get the instrument tuned and held properly. Chapters four to seven teach the letter system and the handful of techniques the pieces need. Then come the fifty tunes, in rough order of difficulty, from three-string nursery melodies to folk songs that use the whole instrument.

There is also a four-week practice plan, a quick-reference page listing all sixteen strings, and an index that gives the source of every melody.
