Azzan was the one member of the Nightshade team that I didn't know very well by the time the series concluded with Firethorn. I'm so glad that I could read this novella to learn a bit more about this former assassin turned hero. I loved seeing Canyon here and also loved seeing Stone, Canyon's older brother, gearing up for his gubernatorial campaign. Stone does have his own book in the Metcalfe series but this book precedes Stone's.
Azzan carried a ton of guilt and faced even more prejudice and alienation for being half Israeli and half Palestinian. Even in the face of tremendous obstacles, Azzan kept calm and cool and used his intelligence to ferret out solutions. Everly was focused and determined to make Stone's campaign a success for herself and for Stone. Carrying the legacy of her grandfather, she pushed herself to be the best. Politics and both of their pasts collide and escalate when a celebratory party gets snowed in and a deadly assassin infiltrates the party for his own purposes.
The novella is short and can be read in one sitting. Because it is a novella, the characters and plot felt a bit truncated but I enjoyed getting to know Azzan better and loved the action and suspense.
