Luney Ratford is a rambling, witty, and at times out of place nine year-old girl who is preparing for her first day of third grade. She takes you through all of her favorite things leading up to "the big day," including going to the candy store, school supply shopping, and packing a lunch, all of which have comical and entertaining stories behind them. Though the night before her first day of school, everything starts to go terribly wrong. From her prank pulling eleven year-old brother Ludwig, her own clumsiness and just poor luck, her day does not go according to plan. Luney realizes that when a special day does not go according to plan, and even seems horrible, there is always something little that can make her day fantastic.
