Lunch with Charlotte

By Leon Berger

Book Overview

Every Friday for twenty-five years, Leon Berger had lunch with Charlotte Urban-and each week she revealed another piece of her extraordinary story. Born in 1919 Vienna, Charlotte survived Kristallnacht hidden in a closet, escaped on the Kindertransport, and endured the London Blitz. But the Nazi persecution wasn't her deepest wound. At nineteen, Charlotte discovered her mother in bed with Karl, the man Charlotte loved-a betrayal that cut deeper than any external enemy could.

Through patient listening, Berger became the sole keeper of Charlotte's complete story, including the secret she'd never told anyone else. This remarkable memoir follows Charlotte from the glory days of imperial Vienna through nine decades of displacement, loss, and reinvention across three continents. It explores not just what happened during the Holocaust, but how survivors live with trauma for the rest of their lives.

With Charlotte's preserved photographs and documents, this expanded edition offers an intimate look at one woman's journey through history's darkest chapter and beyond. A powerful story of resilience, complex mother-daughter bonds, and the courage required not just to survive, but to trust again.
