A 17-year-old girl rides into Texas town one morning in 1971, wearing men's pants and a six-gun, with a dark mission that will turn the town upside down. LUNA is written in the first person by a beautiful, angry half-Mexican girl who comes to town with a purpose and will not be swayed from that purpose by anybody. At the age of five, she saw her Mexican mother kicked to death by her White father and his men to keep her from going to the authorities and tell what he did to her. Twelve years later, she has returned to challenge her father to a duel. On her way to a duel, she beats down two teenaged ranch hands who are trying to molest her; rescues two Mexican kids from a menacing store owner; makes friends with a Mexican family and falls in love with their handsome, articulate son. On the day of the dual, she dresses in a white, confirmation dress and faces off with her Dad and the two ranch hands, killing all three. But she does not properly consider the consequences of her action. The novel is starkly written in in the second person in which the whole story is told from Luna's thoughts. This is a romantic tragedy and allegory that is destined to be a Western classic.
