Calvin would rather do anything else than travel across the country one more day with his passenger, a puppet master that painfully pulls his strings. Since this master doesn't talk, can't be seen, lives inside of him, and doesn't even let him die, Calvin does what he has to do to survive his plight. The passenger, named Not-Me by Calvin as a child, pushes him across the country like a human divining rod looking for others like it. Calvin is unsure of what he is supposed to do with the others. Should he destroyl them, try to help them or does the Not-Me just want to be set free? Calvin is eventually drawn to Tucson, Arizona, where the population has experienced a number of gruesome deaths. Calvin suspects Lou, working the night shift at the local railyard, to be the culprit. Lou has long been a sufferer of unexplained night terrors and hallucinations that his young son seems to have inherited. As Lou attempts to maintain a semblance of sanity for his family, help his son, and keep his wife from leaving him, Calvin recognizes Lou as one of his own and tries to confront him. The meeting doesn't go well for either of them. As both Calvin and Lou finally understand what they are carrying, they also discover the unfortunate meaning of life. The world, they discover, is full of fear for a reason and that the only thing to really fear is the universe itself.
