Northwest Florida is a rural area with a wide variety of local foods. The Florida Gulf coast has wonderful seafood brought in daily by the fishing fleet. It also has many lakes and rivers to provide freshwater fish, and local farms and ranches providing fresh vegetables, beef and pork. The cuisine of the area is naturally focused on the use of the fresh foods available locally. Wild game also provides a significant portion of many diets. Lucy Ward was born in Northwest Florida and lived there all her life. According to her, when she married as a senior in high school, she "couldn't boil water". She grew to be locally renowned for her mastery of the dishes popular in the area. When she died in 2017, her family gathered her recipes, reconstructed ones not written down, added a few that fit in with the theme, and compiled this book.
