After completing his apprenticeship, Lucather has finally become a full-fledged wizard. However, in order to finance the necessary education, the young wizard needed the patronage of an older wizard. In exchange for that patronage, Lucather signed an indenture requiring him to serve his patron for eight years. Lucather soon discovers that life as the assistant of his patron, Getherin, proved far less interesting than he had expected. Then one night while Lucather was recording star positions, he saw a meteor streak through the sky and land somewhere to the north. He reported this incident to Getherin who, in turn, reported it to his former master, Offamund. Offamund then organized an expedition to recover the meteorite and invited Lucather to join it. The young wizard's reward for undertaking this potentially dangerous quest was an early release from his indenture. The opportunity for escaping the drudgery of being Getherin's assistant proved too irresistible to the young wizard and he readily agreed to it. Unfortunately, the meteorite landed deep in a monster-infested wilderness and Offamund was not the only one searching for it. Will Lucather and his companions be able to deal with the monsters they encounter and recover the meteorite before Offamund's rival finds it? Offamund's expedition is a race against time and the stakes are high. Who knows what evil can be wrought with celestial iron? Things do not turn out as expected and Lucather finds himself in a rather difficult situation. One that requires him to seek help from a rather unexpected source in order to ensure his own survival. But seeking that help means that the young wizard will have to cultivate a surprisingly close relationship with a very unusual person.
