I like books that promise to save me time and effort. The front part gives tips for creating lovely gardens for different situations. It has photos with a chart giving the names of the plants so you can duplicate a scene. The section on diseases and pests (Troubleshooting Guide) clued me in to problems I had with damping off and white fly and mildew. An idea I could use was creating an informal shredded bark path in a wooded area. There were many other useful ideas. It tells how to create raised beds, how to terrace a slope, and gives efficient watering techniques. It encourages using native plants and drought-resistant plants. Particularly helpful was the section titled Encyclopedia of Low Maintenance Plants. For each plant it gives a photo, its hardiness, height, soil and light needs, plus names the best varieties of it. I found quite a few that might fit special areas in my yard.
