Book Overview

Loving Yourself for God's Sake

Loving Yourself for God's Sake by Adolfo Quezada published by Resurrection Press, is a concise, gentle book of meditations and reflections rooted in Catholic spirituality. Written by Adolfo Quezada, a spiritual writer and counselor known for his compassionate approach to inner healing and faith, the book guides readers to embrace healthy self-love--not as selfish narcissism, but as a sacred response to God's invitation to nurture and value the self as His gift.

The core message is that loving oneself is essential for authentically loving God and others, serving as the vital link between the two great commandments. It reframes self-acceptance, forgiveness, and personal growth through a divine lens, helping those struggling with low self-esteem, guilt, shame, or unrealistic expectations to find freedom, healing, and joy in God's unconditional love. The book is meditative and practical, often opening to any page for inspiration, making it ideal for personal prayer, daily reflection, or support in spiritual direction.

It is written in a supportive, non-judgmental tone and brevity, with readers noting its helpfulness for building self-worth "for God's sake" rather than ego.

Key bullet points:

Spirituality of self-love -- Presents self-love as a divine calling and responsibility, not selfishness; it's a response to God's love for us and enables fuller love of God and neighbor.Healing and reconciliation -- Encourages reconciling with the past: facing guilt, forgiving oneself (with God's help), releasing shame, letting go of unfulfilled dreams/expectations, and surrendering control to divine love.God's unconditional love -- Emphasizes accepting God's forgiveness, love, and acceptance as the foundation for self-acceptance; love breaks chains of the past, fosters growth, and brings new life/hope.Practical meditations -- Short, reflective passages (often excerpted in spiritual anthologies like Renovar 's Spiritual Classics) that invite readers to relax, play, protect themselves, experience emotions healthily, and view life from a spiritual perspective.Freedom from burdens -- Addresses letting go of anxiety, self-judgment, and harmful patterns; promotes self-nurturing, emotional health, and a childlike trust in God.Overall purpose -- Reminds readers that "loving ourselves is the link between loving God and loving others, and it is for God's sake that we do all three" (from the author's hope stated in the book); aimed at those with low self-esteem or inner wounds seeking spiritual growth and healing.

Audience and style -- Suited for Catholics in personal devotion, recovery/support groups, or spiritual reading; warm, encouraging, and accessible tone with opportunities for growth on every page.

Excellent book

This very short book is helpful for those of us with low self-esteem to learn to love ourselves because it is the least we can do for God.

Beautiful in Every Way

You will not find a better gift for yourself or others than Adolfo Quezada's small gem, Loving Yourself for God's Sake---one of my all-time favorite books. Why? Because it helps people. It is affordable. It is precise. It is poetic. It is wise. It is one of those special, rare works that speaks with timeless appeal to the heart of every reader. My own copy is underlined on practically every page. This book calls us to be our highest selves, it calls us to take care of ourselves, it calls us to spiritual maturity. For all these reasons and more, that is why this little book has become a classic, selling thousands of copies in the U.S., Japan and other places. I have often said, "every person on the planet should have a copy of this book, it changes lives and companions the reader as a friend and mentor. You feel it has been written just for you." Some of the classic statements Quezada makes include: "What you sow in your mind, you reap in your heart. Your value is not dependent on the approval of others or even on your own approval. Responsibility for yourself is your number one task. Let your decisions reflect the totality of your love for God, your faith in God's love for you and the humility of your love of self. You face choices every moment of your life and every choice is an opportunity to take care of yourself. The love between yourself and God cannot be exclusively for you---it bursts from your heart into the world to do God's bidding." This small book is of the highest caliber, a spiritual treasure house that illuminates our deepest longings, hopes and aspirations. For years, I kept my copy by my bed, a prayerful companion to end the day and my reflections as I slipped off to sleep. In my outreach work, I have recommended this highly-readable, affirming book more than any other.

This book is essential for any Christian.

This book changed my life. I thought I knew how to love myself, but I didn't. At least not the way God intends. The unspoken inculturation I grew up with interpreted Jesus' command to "love others as you love yourself" to mean this: put everyone else first and yourself, last. In reality, we tend to lose ourselves in the shuffle of everyday life, diligently seeking to meet others' needs before our own. This book helps the reader to realize the balance must be there in order to really love God and our neighbors. Loving ourselves is NOT an option. Further, this book helps the reader to bring this balance into practice with viable suggestions. "Loving Yourself for God's Sake" would make an excellent resource for a Bible study group or adult eductation course.
