An Action-packed Western Romance

Jessica Hale's family heads out West to avoid the escalating tensions between North and South and moves to Nevada Territory, but trouble finds her there. Her beloved brother returns to the States to protect the family's Kentucky homestead, and Union sympathizers burn their Carson City home, killing her parents and little sister and leaving her alone and at risk. To make matters worse, she's injured in the blaze and whisked away to cattleman Jake Bennett's ranch deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, far from civilization. Realizing the danger Jess is in, Jake takes it upon himself to protect her, which is no easy task considering the fact that she can't stomach the sight of him, blames him for her father's death and tries to escape at the first opportunity. But that's fine by Jake. He doesn't intend to lose his heart to a firebrand like Jess when he's got his own set of troubles--just keep her safe. Both struggle to deal with their emotional scars independently until they trust the Lord with their hurts and heartaches and allow Him to bring healing. Tammy Barley has crafted an action-packed adventure that pulled me in and kept me entertained from first page to last. Plot twists aplenty, nice touches of humor and deep emotion kept me turning the pages eager to see what would happen next. Jess, a spirited heroine who hides her softer side, wound her way into my heart. Jake is the consummate hero, with a caring nature beneath his sun-bronzed, take-charge exterior, whom I fell for--hard. Barley sprinkles the story with a liberal helping of secondary characters who people the ranch and add a nice blend of sweetness and spice. Love's Rescue, Barley's debut novel, is one of the best books I've read this year, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes inspirational Western historicals. I look forward to the sequel, Hope's Promise, and the opportunity to spend more time with Jake and Jess.

Love's Rescue - A Most EXCELLENT read!

Love's Rescue was an EXCELLENT read. It was filled with wonderful real life characters who experienced real life challenges. Jessica Hale lost her family when Confederate sympathizers set fire to her family's home. Jake Bennett rescues her from the fire and takes her back to his ranch deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains to care for her and to keep her safe from those who ment to kill her. Jessica holds resent toward Jake because he didn't rescue her family. She makes several attemps to escape the ranch and return to Carson City but each time she is caught and brought back to the ranch by Jake or one of his men. Can Jessica get past her resentment toward Jake to see that he was only acting in her best interest? Can Jake get past his own loss by helping Jess get past hers? This was one of the most enjoyable stories I've run across. Jake was a "Yummy" hero that was strong and commanding yet tender and gentle. Jessica was a worthly heroine who was full of grit and spunk yet soft at heart. The ranch hands were completely delicious. All of them honorable and loyal to Jake as well as Jess. I highly recommend this book. Tammy Barley holds your interest throughout the book as she paints a picture of ranch life in the 1860s with it's triumphs and set backs. I am SO looking forward to Book 2. Great Job Tammy!!!

Fabulous Book

Set in 1863 during the Civil War, the conflict between the Confederates and Unionists is evident even across the country in the Nevada Territory. A book that explains not only war facts, but the history of the people's relationship with the native tribes. The main character Jessica's story will capture your heart and mind. Finishing this story was on the four front of my mind during the times I couldn't be reading it. Though a little slow to me in the beginning, the end more than makes up for it! Jessica's tenacity gets her into many scrapes, but her rescuer is always there to help her out! This book was extra interesting to me as it is set in a territory that I am familiar with in modern times so to hear about it during Civil War times just intrigued me. Also the ranch life was interesting as the area I live in has ranching as a way of life so to read about the way they ranched in the old days was very interesting.

Love's Rescue--A Great Summer Read

This is a wonderful story. During 1863 as the Civil War is raging in the East, in Carson City, Nevada, Jessica Hale is embroiled in her own version of the War when Northern empathizers overhear her sending a telegram regarding the whereabouts of her Confederate soldier brother, Ambrose. Later that same day she loses her entire family in a fire, and cattleman, Jake Bennett, comes to her rescue. He takes her to his remote ranch in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. From there the reader is taken into the world of the old West where life is at times almost idyllic, and at other times as raw as the land. As I walked alongside Jess's soul-journey from despair and hopelessness to abiding joy and hope restored through her relationship with God and with Jake, I found I didn't want to put the book down. Tammy's beautiful way of bringing out setting and making it come alive caused me to feel like I was right there with the cattlemen as they wrangled calves, cut the herds and chased down stampeding Mustangs. I was also there as Jess found herself restored through her coming to peace with what had happened to her and her family. Jake also has a backstory of difficulties, and as he works to help Jess heal, he finds himself able to finally heal as well, and to love again. The only quibble I have with the story is that I felt that the prologue could have been either cut or woven into the story altogether. I am not a great lover of prologues and find the use of any over the length of a page or so a great bother. Even so, I did read it, and it did provide background information necessary to understanding Jessica's point of view at the beginning of the story. After that, it was a long, delightful and most enjoyable read. All told at a calming pace that made me feel each time I picked the book up like I was sitting on Tammy's front porch with a frosty glass of sweet tea and being told the most wonderful of stories.

Cowboys, Cowboys

Boy am I a sucker for a cowboy book! And Love's Rescue doesn't disappoint. This book stirred up every John Wayne emotion I have. It is the story of Jessica Hale, living in Navada Territory. When her brother leaves to join the Confederates, she is attacked for supporting him. Enter Jake the cowboy. He risks his life to save her twice and when she suffers a great loss, he is there to help Jess sort out the mess of her life. This book was well written. I especially like the way Barley put you in the setting of the Sierra region. I loved the descriptions of the houses on Jake's ranch and the unity between the cattlemen and the Paiute people living nearby. And there were plenty of characters to love beyond Jess and Jake. I especially loved Jake's posse, loyal to the end, just like good cowboys should be. I think my favorite part is when Jess "alters" the men in the camp's britches. Hilarious. Good book. Looking forward to reading more from Barley.
