The young, up-and-coming actress Camilla Stuart is on a visit from London to her mother Jennifer Lawson, herself a very successful actress, in the latter's elegant home in Scotland. When Camilla was a child, Jennifer abandoned her family for the older, but famous actor Lawler Random. Camilla never forgave her mother. Now, many years later, Camilla has come to see Jennifer again. During her brief visit, the two actresses talk about their careers, acting, the theatre and drama. They perform extracts from well-known plays, sing, and play on their musical instruments. But the relationship is tense; the past keeps coming back in recrimination and conflict. At the end of her brief visit, Camilla leaves her wealthy, but now lonely mother, apparently reconciled. But doubt still hangs in the air
