My good friend Ricky used to call me a prude. The sound of his mocking laugh haunted me for days after I told him I hadn't had sex in 10 months.

"Next time," I began, "I want to be in a committed relationship."

He rolled his eyes and began to preach about all the fun I was missing. Much like a television Evangelist, Ricky hoped to bring me to the other side. He wished to lure me into the promiscuous world he respected, loved, and lived. He desired to rid me of my Catholic guilt so I could go buckwild.

Mami, on the other hand, is Ricky's opposite. 'Prude' is a blessed word in her limited English vocabulary. And though she simply ground her teeth when I told her I wasn't a virgin anymore, I know she secretly wished I had waited until marriage. If Mami knew the exact number of men I've slept with, she would think I was a bonafide slut. Mami would cry out in shame while making the sign of the cross. She'd blame herself and wonder where she went wrong as a mother. Through sobs, she would recite one of her infamous euphemisms, "Yo no te crie as?!"
