It's 2010. Preparing the historic Bonner home for sale, Rod Bonner Sterling and his husband Wyl Sterling discover an old trunk locked in a compartment in a dark corner of the basement. Among the artifacts in the old trunk is a diary. A diary written by Felix Bonner. [The reader is transported to 1898.] Felix Bonner is sent to Sterling Ranch by his domineering father, Cornelius, to learn to be a man. There he meets Joseph (Joey) Sterling. The two young men bond as Joey teaches Felix all about ranching. Their bond becomes physical. Felix drives a wedge in their relationship when he thinks Joey wants to marry and have children. Joey struggles with his love for Felix, but the two finally settle the rift. Felix sets a record in calf roping at the annual rodeo, but his father calls him back home. Felix finally has enough, and flees back to the ranch where he is loved. Cornelius writes a berating letter to Felix. Angered at the letter, Joey's father Grover threatens Cornelius Bonner. Cornelius Bonner hatches a scheme to teach Grover Sterling a lesson, but the scheme backfires. Angered at the loss, Cornelius Bonner goes to the ranch and takes Felix at gunpoint. Grover Sterling and Joey come to town to rescue Felix. Cornelius decides shooting Joey will solve everything, but he shoots the Sheriff instead and ends up in prison. Back on the ranch, Joey succumbs to a rattlesnake bite. Grover sends Felix to the university. [Returning to 2010] Rod and Wyl figure out that their Great Uncles met and fell in love more than a hundred years before they did, so the Bonner/Sterling families have a history they knew nothing about. They discover the foundation Felix started, and place a marker on Joey's grave.
