The author addresses this circular letter to his great nephew, Mateo, grandson of his sister, Marti McLaughlin. At 88, he considers it part of the inheritance he leaves for him, as well as for his children, and his children's children, and for all his siblings' children and their children's children, born and unborn. He writes this memoir in partial response to a most profound request that Mateo made to his mom, Megan, in 2019, at age five (!): "Tell me all you know about God." That same day, at supper, Megan passed this precocious request on to her Uncle Wally. Mateo had just been present earlier that weekend when Wally had given the eulogy at his brother, Maryknoll Father Tom Saunders' funeral. Like every autobiography, this has been a lifetime in the making. It began in bits and pieces in the journals that the author kept for most of the 60-70 years of his adult life. In 2007, however, he encountered Gainesville Poets and Writers . Inspired by these courageous wordsmiths, after six months he began to put pen to paper and fingertips to keyboard. In this matrix he gave birth to this "fifties-sixties seminary-priesthood love story," the story of his life together with God as he understands God, His story begins dramatically, at the "worst" or most pivotal moment of his entire life, at the beginning of his ninth, and final, year in that seminary, his Charybdis, and his passage through that maelstrom.
