Violet Kelso is a free lance writer living in small town Kansas, but when her mother's caretaker wants to retire, Violet must move to Roswell, New Mexico, to care for her ailing mother. It doesn't take her long to realize caring for her mother will consume all her energy and her free lance writing career begins to take a back seat.
While shopping at the grocery store, she encounters the most gorgeous man she's ever seen in her life--so gorgeous he's Dolce & Gabbana, photo shoot ready. She grabs her grocery cart and hurries away, only to realize she grabbed the wrong cart. Causey rounds the end cap and remarks they must be watching the same cooking show on TV as their carts contain identical items. Violet is dismayed when her heart declares, 'This is him This is the one ' Internally, she retorts, 'But what about Cole?'--Cole, her boyfriend waiting for her back in Kansas. She turns down Causey's invitation to join him for coffee and hurries back to her mother.
When Violet's sister comes to give her time off to visit Cole, they encounter Causey Lindo at a local restaurant. As before, her heart leaps for joy at the sight of him and her sister, Arlene agrees, saying, 'Why not encourage him? He obviously likes you ' But Violet rejects Arlene's and Causey's suggestions to spend more time with him. 'I'm going to Kansas to see Cole, ' she insists.
Things go from bad to worse--Violet catches her boyfriend in bed with another woman. That relationship over, she returns to Roswell and learns National Geographic loved her pitch for an article about song birds of Kansas. But she's forced to turn down their offer--taking care of her mother consumes all her energy. Her career over, her cheating boyfriend out of her life, her mother's dementia getting worse, Violet is ready to give up and prays for God to burn down the house, to do something She looks out the window and who should be walking the sidewalk, but the handsome, sharp dressed Causey Lindo. She storms outside to confront him and embarks into romance with an alien count and on into a wild adventure outer space.
