In 1890, Lahaina is in the midst of unrest. Kaiulani, Crown Princess of the Kingdom of Hawaii, has recently become known throughout the world for her intelligence, beauty and determination to restore her nations monarchy. When a Scottish missionary lands on the shores of Lahaina, he finds himself drawn into a revolt by those desirous of annexing the islands to the United States. Will he underestimate Kaiulani, the barbarian princess or can they work together to restore peace to this normally tranquil paradise?
UCLA American History graduate student Sandi Smith goes to bed every night for the past four and a half years wondering whether her husband John is dead or a guest of the Viet Cong. The military list John as an MIA and though she prays for him, Sandi knows he probably will never come home and she will never know his fate. As part of the university sponsored history project she flies to Maui to meet with the oldest person on the island Auntie Hannah to discuss with the elderly woman what she recalls about the Kingdom of Hawaii royal family in the late nineteenth century. Auntie Hannah provides more than just a verbal response to the visiting Californian: she provides insight as she attended school with Princess Kauliana in London; whimsicality remarking her last great cup of tea was in 1897. She gives Sandi journals that focus on the 1890s when her best friend and companion Crown Princess "barbarian princess" Kauliana of the Kingdom of Hawaii tried diligently to return the nation back to a monarchy. As rebellion stirs to become part of the United States, Scottish missionary Andrew arrives on Lahaina leaving the Princess with difficult choices to make; just like Sandi must do on a lesser scale now that she has met Archie. This is a great historical romance with a strong historiographic spin and a terrific Royal Flush twist. With a strong sense of place and eras (the 1890s and 1973), this character driven by the lead females in the two periods provide the audience with an excellent entry in the Love Finds You series. From the love of a young historian to the love of a young princess this book entwines the old and new bringing history once again into a wonderful story that everyone can relate to. The Thoenes are the best "truth in fiction writers" of our time. Only they have a way of giving you a complete history lesson on a subject and at the same time tug at your heartstrings. I can think of noone that wouldnt enjoy reading this beautiful story. The mystery reader will enjoy the entwinement of government and deceit against old world tradition and all others the anticipation that lasts throughout the book in whether the young historians husband will come home safe. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat with a kleenex box in your hand and the best part is that it is a true story so you are actually learning something about history as you read it.

Once again I feel as if I am living a dual life as I join these vividly drawn people in their joys and struggles. In my real life I often find myself pulled back to moments in the story and relating them to experiences and interactions I am having, they are so real. These people are now a part of me and I am better for it. Thank you once again for taking snapshots of history and making them into rich paintings of depth and color. As a young woman I was fascinated and moved by a song, The Last Resort by the Eagles. It mentions Lahaina but I never knew exactly what that part meant until now. Thank you Bodie Thoene for enriching my life, educating my mind and touching my heart.
