"Love Conquers Fear" is the first of a series of novelizations on the 1980s "Dallas" TV series. The books come from the Soaps & Serials imprint of Pioneer Communications Network, which also did similar novelizations of TV's "Guiding Light," "Days of Our Lives" and "Dallas" spinoff "Knots Landing," among others. There are at least 14 books in the "Dallas" series. This first one begins just after the show's five-episode introductory miniseries (which was regarded as Season One). Consider it a retelling of the two-part "Reunion" episodes that began Season Two. Pamela Ewing (that awful "Barnes woman"!) is still Bobby Ewing's new wife and just suffered her miscarriage at J.R. Ewing's hand a few weeks earlier. Pamela's father Digger has made his scene at the Ewing barbecue and is hospitalized after another bad drinking binge. Lucy is sneaking off to see her mother Valene, who's a diner waitress. Bobby and Pam go on a oilman's junket in Las Vegas and run into Bobby's long-lost older brother Gary. They then convince him to return to Southfork Ranch with them. And, coupled with Valene's own return to the Ranch, only bad things result ... J.R. buries Gary in a mountain of paperwork on the Ewing holding he'd like him to take over, knowing that Gary will be overwhelmed. Valene continues smelling a rat. feeling the pressure, Gary almost takes another drink, but then leaves the ranch after he realizes he just doesn't belong there. J.R. then tries to buy off Valene with a five-thousand-dollar check, which she refuses when she leaves. These books are easy and quick to read. They're written in plain language, and they dive just a little into the motivations of the characters without too many theatrics. There is very little character description, as it's assumed you've seen all these folks on-screen already. In this first book, what you really get is the sense of being an outsider for both Pamela and Gary -- and the overwhelming "chill" they each feel at Southfork. J.R.'s dastardliness is not center-stage like it is in the series, and Sue Ellen, Ray, Jock and Ellie don't do a whole lot. Just easy-to-read fun, though not adding a whole lot to the episodes themselves.
