Filled with inspiration and optimism this book strays from the normal genre I typically read (non-fiction, Sci-Fi, and Technical) and it has me eager to read further books by this author. I was drawn to it initially because it was written by a local author that I had a "six degree" type connection with and I had promised I would read it (full disclosure). I was pleasantly surprised by this book; since it was the author's debut novel I wasn't expecting it to be as engulfing as it was. Though some may bill this as a Romance novel it clearly is no cheap "dime-store" depiction of the love lorn and is very tastefully written for almost any age. The story follows four main characters through a period of time living in a Chicago suburb during the fifties and sixties. Two of the main characters are the parents of one of the other remaining two. There is also a key supporting character that brings everyone together; this character inspires all she comes across. During a time period of racial tensions and ignorance the characters overcome these stereotypes and biases reaching a climax of self-appreciation. The author has masterfully spun her tale into a web that captures the reader; clearly she has tapped into her skills in dealing with teen and conflict issues. This book is a great gift for loved ones and those struggling with self-esteem issues.
