In January 1775 preparations for war are already underway in the South Carolina colony. Popular Peggy Monaghan and one of her two best friends, Elizabeth Lynch, have much to discuss twice a week over tea as new militia units are being formed and the Royal Governor has to take refuge on a British warship. A number of the wealthy young South Carolinians sent to university in London and Edinburgh are coming home to join the Patriot cause. Among them is the youngest brother of Peggy's other best friend who, having been obliged to marry in England, chose to go north and join the Continental Army to escape the wagging tongues of Charles Town. However, with an attack by British warships imminent in spring of 1776, he does return and, inevitably, he and Peggy fall in love. War creates unusual circumstances, the British occupation creates massive destruction, but love can still flourish. Yet, as the war comes to an end, they know they must deal with the reality of his faraway British wife.
