Have you ever looked at the world and asked yourself why it is the way it is? Why is there so much pain and heartache? Why do people abuse others the way they do? Why are we so selfish? The easy answer is to say sin is why we are the way we are. The difficulty with the simplicity of that response is that not many people ask the question of what sin is and what sin is not. It is not a question or concept we tend to ponder very often and because this is the case it remains a very ambiguous problem. But I believe if we did ponder that question, we could come upon something that would completely devistate our minds and hearts--in a good way. It is easy to say we are all sinners. It is a much harder thing to realize the truth of that statement. It is hard to ponder the depth of its truth. But we must. And I suggest that if we did ponder the depth of its truth it would completely change the way we go about our lives. It would change us because once we understand what sin is, then and only then can we begin to make sense of the world. Then and only then can we begin to ponder what defeats sin and solves the problem it creates. Then and only then can we ponder what God was doing when he sent his Son into the world. Then and only then can we surrender to Jesus and have a basis for following him. The beauty of the questioning and searching is also its simplicity. The answer to sin is love and the answer will always be love. But from our current vantage point, that answer is a rather meaningless one. Love doesn't hold much water where we come from; it doesn't mean much. So what is it? Well, that, in many ways is what this book is about. But what makes this unique from the other million books on love is that this book is actually about life. But what makes this book unique from the other million books about life is that this book is actually about death. And what makes this book unique from the other million books about death is that this books is really about how ugly the human condition is and in light of this ugliness, what love has to say to it. I think it is profound. I know it has changed me.
