Love - Not Law: A response to “Liberty, Not Licence” by David Gay

New Covenant Theology is a developing Bible-based view which seeks to understand God's historical revelation of redemption from the perspective of the greater light brought to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. It does this by examining the various covenants documented in Scripture, seeing these as the key to a full and correct knowledge of God's plan. However, there is a difference of opinion, even within those who would regard themselves as standing by this view, as to whether Christians are to be considered 'under law'. Some say 'yes', and label this 'new law' as "the Law of Christ". One of the chief proponents of this view is David Gay, who has recently published a book of collected papers entitled "Liberty, Not Licence". In it, he criticises those who do not agree with him and expresses grave doubts about their orthodoxy. In "Love - Not Law", David White takes issue with his arguments and seeks to explain where and why the 'other side' takes its stand. He emphasises that his view is thoroughly Bible-based, and endeavours to show how David Gay's view 'reads into' the Bible what he assumes to be true - that all men are always 'under law' to God in some form or other. By contrast, the author insists that the proper comparison of the new covenant with the old covenant is that in the new, God has given, not more law, extended law, enlightened law, or even better law. In the new covenant, God has given His Spirit. And this is what transforms the believer's living vitally and crucially.
