I highly recomend this book. I laughed out loud and I cried. What a great grandmother and mother Ranny Grady had. Everyone should get to know those two women and learn from their wisdom. D. Farley, Albany, KY
Lou and Jessie are awesome!

I just finished this book and it really touched me. What an absolutely amazing woman Lou Crandall was. She lived many of the toughest situations imaginable (loveless marriage to a jerk, giving birth to 12 children, being widowed at the start of the Depression and having to support all of them on her own, having several of them break her heart in various ways as they departed from her wonderful Godly teachings, and then to die of cancer after all that!) But she never came across as negative, and that was a great example for me. She was inventive, loving, positive, and SO smart. Her love for the Lord just shone through her whole life. And the relationship between Lou and her daughter Jessie was so precious. Through it all, they had each other's love and support which was a lifeline for them both. This author captured that mother-daughter bond so closely I was shocked to find out after I finished the book that Ranny Grady is a man! He must have a wonderful close relationship with his own mom, Jessie, to have understood so deeply their precious bond. The only slightly negative thing I have to say about this book at all is that there were several minor typos in it that the editor didn't catch. Typos aside, however, this book was a great read. It was a great example of a resourceful, positive, Godly mom, and a heartwarming story of a mom and her daughter loving each other so deeply.

Lou's Dirty Dozen is a historical fiction story narratored by Jessie Grady, who is 94 years old. The story is about her remarkable mother, Lula Jane Crandal, who was a widow with a doxen children during the Great Depression. It is written my Jessie's son, Ranny Grady. By the time the reader reads 50 pages, he/she will think that have become a member of the family! The reader is taken on a journey that is fascinating, filled with great joy, tremendous humor, and many tears. Every parent of every stripe and ilk will be challenged to think as clearly and as wise as Lou when it comes to rearing children. Lou' s parenting tools are these: God's Bible, Mc Guffey's Readers, Webster's Dictionary, and 'spiritual bailing wire'. She is from the 'old school' where 'No' is often used regarding her children! Women will stand up and cheer this remarkable woman as she faces life's great adversities and fights them to a bloody draw many times. She seldom fails to find a way to use scripture to teach her children about life and their choices which often bring terrible outcomes. The reader will be emotionally drawn into vicariously enjoying the close bond between a girl and her mother. Those who have this special privileged relationship will bask in it glow; those who don't, will cry because they missed this great gift of life. Libraires through out the nation report that "Lou" is a winner for their Reading Clubs. The Metropolitan Public Library System, www.metrolibrary.com, in Oklahoma City, has featured the book on its 'on line magazine' for the month of October. The book is adult fiction. It has some mild language concerns and there is a chapter depicting a sexaul assault. The story shows life with all of its ugly warts and its horrendous evil that often befalls God's crown of creation: mankind. The book is a 'demographic sweetheart'! Women 45 and up fall in love with "Lou".
