How do you fit an entire childhood into a trash bag?
For Natia and her siblings, that question becomes painfully real when they are removed from the only home they have ever known and scattered through the foster care system. Separated from family, placed in unfamiliar homes, and forced to grow up far too quickly, they learn that being placed somewhere "safe" does not always mean being protected.
When Natia arrives at the home of Kayla Banxs, she hopes she may have finally found stability. Instead, she enters a world of rigid expectations, favoritism, emotional cruelty, fear, and abuse hidden behind the appearance of a functioning foster home. While case files and inspections tell one story, the children living inside the house experience another.
But Lost in the System is more than a story of what was done to them.
It is a story of what survived.
Through separation, abandonment, humiliation, violence, and years of wondering whether they were worthy of being loved, Natia and the other children hold on to pieces of themselves-and to one another. As adulthood brings them face-to-face with the people, memories, and wounds they thought they had left behind, they must confront not only what happened, but how it shaped the people they became.
Inspired by lived experiences in and around the foster care system, Lost in the System gives voice to children too often reduced to case numbers, placements, and paperwork. It is an emotional story of resilience, family, trauma, survival, healing, and the uncomfortable truth that a system created to protect children can sometimes fail the very people who need it most.
They were separated. They were wounded. They were overlooked. But they were never completely broken.
