Lost Cause

Rather than face arrest for petty theft, an impoverished Bryn Syzwyck agrees to serve as a safety inspector for the Nautilus Corporation. His work sends him deep underground, into a massive water tunnel hailed as the salvation of New City. As his job progresses, his bond with the tunnel workers strengthens and his distrust of the corporation grows. Aboveground, Bryn's ailing neighbor, Eloise, is his confidant, although his plan to inherit her apartment complicates their relationship. After witnessing Bryn's theft, Miriam, a young secretary, eludes him, and his pursuit of her leads Bryn on a journey out of the tunnel and toward reconciliation.
