Before emerging as a vibrant suburb of the nation's capital in the early 20th century, Arlington was the agricultural center of Alexandria County.
Global notice came after the creation and expansion of Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon and Fort Myer, site of the first airplane casualty on September 17, 1908.
