The inspiration for this story comes from the many references in the Bible about sheep and shepherds. Most significant is the parable of Jesus found in Luke chapter 15 where Jesus compares rejoicing in heaven over one repentant sinner to the joy in the shepherd's heart when he finds his lost sheep. That one sheep was so very important to the shepherd that he left his whole flock, the ninety-nine, just to find him. Hopefully this little story conveys the same message of the importance of each and every individual to the heart of every child who hears or reads this book.
