ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Juan Urbano is back with a family saga wrapped up in a plot of greed and dirty business going back generations.

"Behind every great fortune lies a hidden crime." -Honor? de Balzac

Does having an illustrious last name oblige you to defend it, even beyond your own ideals?

Juan Urbano, professor of literature, commissioned writer, and occasional detective, who is also the protagonist of the novels Mala gente que camina, Operaci?n Gladio, and Ajuste de cuentas, is unexpectedly hired by a man belonging to a family that has been involved for generations in commerce--not always legal, and for a time not only of goods but also of people--to find the descendants of a secret daughter of his great-grandfather's. In his investigation, Urbano must negotiate the resistance of other members of the clan, who aren't willing to share their empire with a new heiress. This is the beginning of a dark plot that moves from Spain to Cuba, and later to Africa, and reveals to readers how some of the great Spanish fortunes were amassed, where the money came from that made certain families so powerful, and what their members will do to preserve their interests.
