It's June 1982 and winter in the Falkland Islands. 24 young deserters from the Argentine army spend the last weeks of the conflict hiding in a cave. Inside their refuge they listen to the radio, stockpile supplies and exchange stories. Outside, under cover of night, they trade with the British and the Argentine quartermaster.
"Malvinas Requiem" ("Los Pichiciegos" in the original) tells the story of a group of young Argentine soldiers during the Falklands War with England (1982) that decide that is better not to fight and hide in a hole in the ground, where they tell stories, listen to radio and have some exchanges with the surprised English military. Some sequences are hilarious, some heartbreaking. Written during the war, and first published "underground". A tremendous book that captures like no other a way of speaking, a way of thinking and the final days of the military rule in Argentina. This is the only book available in English (so far) of perhaps the greatest living Argentine writer.
