The last months of World War II in Europe were the most brutal and destructive period of the entire conflict--also the most chaotic and least known. On average, thirty thousand people lost their lives daily on various fronts, in bombed cities, in refugee convoys fleeing the Red Army, on ships risking passage through the Baltic Sea, in prisons and concentration camps, on trains, and along the roads used to evacuate deportees.
