If you are a Christian, most likely there have been many occasions when the Lord has answered your prayers. You asked Him to provide some financial need, to heal your body, to work out some marital conflict, or to solve some pressing personal problem and He answered precisely as you prayed.
Most any Christian could testify of many such answers to prayer. As a matter of fact, that ought to be the normal pattern for one who is walking in fellowship with the Lord. Every day should bring some conscious reminder that He has heard and answered our prayers. Any believer who cannot point to such victory is missing the very best of that which the Lord has provided for His children.
However, most of us would have to be honest in saying there have been many other occasions when the Lord has not answered our prayers. With honesty and sincerity we bowed before Him and said, "Lord, would you please do this for me?" And He didn't do it. Now, why is that? If we ask the Lord to do something for us and He doesn't do it, then why doesn't He?
Jesus said, "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" - Matthew 7:11
It is obvious from that verse of Scripture that our Heavenly Father is anxious to answer our prayers. His blessings do not have to be prodded or begged from Him for it is His good pleasure to give His children the desires of their heart. If then our prayers are not being answered something is either wrong with us or our motives and if we are really sincere about praying aright we must carefully examine our lives to see what is hindering our prayers.
In this brief devotional study I have sought to do just that-to take a serious look at some of the most common reasons for unanswered prayer. May the Christ who loved us and gave Himself in our behalf be pleased to use these frail words to help some lonely and discouraged Christian answer the question, "Lord, why don't you answer my prayers?"
