Ever the dutiful daughter, Miss Emma Rutherford finds herself betrothed to the unlikely, but devastatingly handsome Gerald, Lord Kane. At some point in the future, the country mouse will become a Countess, a future she'd never even considered for herself. When Lord Kane suggests she come to London so they may become better acquainted, Emma, her father and her younger half-brother Stephen, leave Dorset for the bustling big city. It should have all gone so smoothly, but it's just one problem after another, leading to all kinds of difficulties, keeping Emma continually off-balance. Gerald had been married previously, but his wife Margot died in an accident. Was he still in love with her, as some folks tried to tell her? Was there another candidate waiting to become his next Countess? Who should this young country girl, who knew no one in the city, believe? No one, but no one can create ::chiennes:: like Sandra Wilson. Her over-the-top trouble-making villainesses are always so enjoyable to watch as they do their darnedest to cause trouble in excessive amounts. It's such fun, then, to watch them fall on their beautiful faces, as they always--always--do. This time around, it's Raine, the Countess of Purbeck, who makes no bones about her desire for Gerald, and who doesn't mind telling more than a few lies in an attempt to achieve her wishes. Stephen finds himself in bad company, leading to several tense confrontations with Lord Avenley. A frivolous boat-ride on the Thames turns to near disaster when Stephen falls overboard, hitting his head in the process. As if that wasn't bad enough, he suffers a severe chill, and refuses to do as the doctor orders, putting his life as well as Emma's at risk. Gerald is busy with the political situation in London. His best friend, Lord Castlereagh is drawn into a duel. But then when Gerald must fight his own duel, Lord Castlereagh seconds him. All these myriad threads form one glittering and colorful tapestry of London life in the early 1800s. Sandra Heath is a masterful story-teller, making it all seem so vivid and so real, you expect the characters to walk right out of the pages of this most enjoyable book!
