Looking Back with Hack

The great outdoors makes its appeal to nearly everyone, but it is not easy to capture that appeal in words. In this selection from the best of Hack Miller's outdoor stories he achieves that aim. In the personal esperiences recounted there is something for everyone, all of it written in the light, easy style the author has made his own. If you want nostalgia, read about the scenes and fishig holes of his boyhood. There are plenty of stories about how to fish and about how not to fish, about worms, flies, and lures, plus some canny comments on exceptions that sometimes inexplicably work - like fishing with bare hooks. Deer and duck hunting gets its share of attention. There are unusual experiences with animals - the big pink bear that invaded the tent, the moose that barred the stream, the deer that ran Hack over, the horse that did everything but pull the trigger, and many others. There is humor here too, and insights into human nature if you look for them. Beautiful scenery comes to life under the author's pen.
