Looking Back: A sampler of writings by a veteran newsman

Selected stories and speeches by Jenk Jones Jr., former Editor and Publisher of The Tulsa Tribune. Jenk Jones Jr. was a longtime newspaperman, spending nearly one-third of a century on The Tulsa Tribune as well as time on the Anchorage Times, Minneapolis Tribune and Colorado Daily. He also was a stringer for the New York Times and Life magazine and had articles published in other newspapers. He specialized in covering Oklahoma and national politics, including eight national conventions, and ran The Tribune's polling operation. He also wrote travel articles, many with historical emphasis, from more than six dozen countries, most of the states and all corners of Oklahoma. In addition, he covered the space program, prisons, weather, military, sports and a variety of other subjects. He covered the state Capitol in Oklahoma City and also spent a year reporting from Washington, D.C. His Tribune years saw him serve as a reporter, copy editor, wire editor, copy desk chief, assistant city editor, assistant managing editor, managing editor, executive editor and editor and publisher. He was active in the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, including serving as national treasurer and a board member plus chairman or vice chairman of more than a dozen of its committees. He is a member of the APME Regents, an honorary group of former officers. He received the third Meritorious Service Award the APME handed out. He also was active in the Oklahoma Press Association. He taught journalism and Oklahoma political history in several colleges and gave many speeches on the facts and foibles of state politics as well as other subjects. A member of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame, the University of Tulsa Communication Hall of Fame and an "icon" of the Tulsa Press Club, he also received Distinguished Service Awards from the arts and sciences departments of Oklahoma State University and the University of Tulsa. These stories and speeches bear a strong emphasis on Oklahoma politics with their serious and silly sides, but also deal with historical factors and interesting personalities in other areas. They are but a small cross-section of hundreds of articles he wrote and many talks he gave.
