Look Up From the Map: A Field Guide to Seeing What's Actually There
What if the biggest obstacle to seeing the world clearly is what you already think you know?
We live by maps. Our beliefs, memories, assumptions, and labels help us navigate the world. They tell us who we are, what other people are like, and what to expect next.
But every map leaves something out.
In Look Up From the Map: A Field Guide to Seeing What's Actually There, Rabbi Ben Newman explores the fascinating gap between reality and our descriptions of it, drawing on the insights of general semantics, philosophy, contemplative practice, and everyday life.
Beginning with a nearly disastrous encounter with a utility pole on a street in Japan, Newman takes readers on a journey through the invisible habits that shape our experience. Why do we mistake assumptions for facts? Why do old beliefs survive contradictory evidence? How do words become walls between people? And how can we learn to see what is actually happening?
Through memorable stories, surprising historical examples, gentle humor, and thirteen practical exercises, readers will discover how to:
Recognize the assumptions hiding inside everyday judgments.
Question familiar stories about themselves and others.
Navigate disagreement with greater clarity and curiosity.
Loosen rigid labels and inherited beliefs.
Pause before reacting and respond more deliberately.
Reconnect with the richness of immediate experience.
Blending intellectual inquiry with the wisdom of contemplative practice, Look Up From the Map offers a practical philosophy for living with greater awareness, humility, and freedom.
The world is always offering us more than our explanations can contain. Sometimes all we need to do is look up.
