Look Back in Time: Russell Crotty and Lick Observatory documents a two-year collaboration between noted American artist Russell Crotty, the UC Lick Observatory, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), and the Institute of the Arts and Sciences (IAS) of the Arts Division at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Initiated and organized by the IAS, the collaboration produced a unique art-and-science exhibition for the ICA. It featured an immersive new installation by Crotty, a selection of his earlier drawings and sculpture, and an installation of rarely seen historic artifacts, instruments, documents, and photographs from Lick's illustrious history. The exhibition was curated by John S. Weber, director of the IAS; Tony Misch, director of the Lick Observatory Historical Collections Project; Russell Crotty; and Cathy Krayer Kimball, Executive Director of the ICA. The exhibition ran Nov. 13, 2016, to February 26, 2017.Lavishly illustrated and elegantly designed, this book will appeal to readers interested in the intersection of contemporary art and science, the history of astronomy, drawing, and the creation of interdisciplinary exhibitions that bridge art and science.
