Longings of the Soul: a poetic response

WE LONG TO LIVE DEEPLY, more in touch with God, our surroundings and each other. To appreciate what we have and unpack where we've been, to dream about where we want to go and give shape to our stories, in a spirit of prayer and spiritual companionship. This book responds to these longings through original poetry. IN A THOUGHTFUL, POETIC VOICE, this book touches on seven spiritual longings. These include a desire for SOLITUDE that is not loneliness. SILENCE born of freedom. CONTEMPLATION that redeems boredom. FORGIVENESS that rings true to the stories we tell well into our senior years. PRESENCE that banishes distraction. VOCATIONAL ALIGNMENT with our spiritual DNA that allows our work to become one of our great sources of joy, not frustration. And, finally, SABBATH-REST--that God-ordained antidote to a 24/7 mindset that wears us down until we cease to function as fully human and in touch with the divine. To set aside one day a week to rest may sound easy, but it takes time to set in place spiritual disciplines that are meant to meet the deep longings of our soul, to lift our spirits so that we may soar, like eagles, aloft. POETRY BY NATURE MAKES ROOM for this need to slow down, to allow God's Spirit to speak to our spirit in a way we can receive and be renewed from the inside out. It is a contemplative, creative artform with reliable roots in Christianity, and I believe it is one of the native languages of the soul.
