Does lightning strike from a clear sky? It does for Hanek. a strong young man toiling day-by-day in a rock quarry while dreaming of a better life in the North. Fearful of traveling alone on the long and possibly fatal road through the wilderness, his fate is suddenly determined after an accident occurs, and he is forced to flee to escape a mob who believe he has killed a man. He embarks on a difficult journey, fraught with danger. Along the way, Hanek meets four riders, including a King's Courier and a Knight, and he joins them on their travels. Together they quell robbers and murderers, escape and avalanche, and fend off wild animals. Despite the sudden death lurking around every bend, Hanek cannot look back - only ahead, to the Eden he has dreamed of.
