In March 2013, the South Bank Center revealed designs for a massive redevelopment to turn the iconic South Bank Undercroft skate park into retail units and build a replacement park down river. However, the Undercroft is a treasured space--it's considered the birthplace of British skateboarding. A haven for skateboarders, BMX riders, and graffiti artists for the past forty years, it is the oldest recognized and still-extant skateboarding space in the world. Long Live South Bank, the grassroots campaign fighting this redevelopment, is dedicated to protecting the Undercroft in its current form and spreading awareness about its irreplaceable historical value, unique architecture, and thriving community. In Long Live South Bank, Ellen Parnavelas celebrates this globally renowned street space and offers a much-needed survey of the vital culture and community that has evolved there over the years.
